Bee Docs Timeline 2.5 - Released!

Thursday, March 05, 2009

I just published the 2.5 version of Bee Docs Timeline. This is one of our biggest releases since the launch of the 3D Edition almost a year ago. We (yes, we!) will be working on some more detailed blog posts and some videos to demonstrate the new features, but I wanted to give you an overview as soon as possible.

First, we have made bulk edit more stable. Bulk edit mode has not been as stable as the chart view modes and certain combinations of actions, usually involving undo, would sometimes freeze the application. I put an emphasis in this release on tracking down and fixing these bugs.

Second, I have improved the quality of video exports. I won't get into the technical details here, but the bottom line is that your video exports should look better (and render faster). I have also added professional quality motion blur for video exports. Motion blur is a advanced topic, but it basically makes the motion of your timeline look smoother and more realistic. Please note that turning on motion blur will significantly increase your video export wait times.

Third, this version allows you to export video segments to Keynote! Not only that, but you can choose to pause only on selected events which will allow you to highlight the parts of your timeline that you choose. See an example Keynote export here.

Finally, I added an automatic importer for Things by Cultured Code. Things is a new application winning rave reviews that allows you to create To Do lists. If you have To Do items with due dates, you can now import them into a timeline with just a couple of clicks.

Version 2.5 is a free upgrade. So please use "Check for Updates" in the "Timeline 3D" menu to update today!

Release Notes - 2.5

  • NEW: Export full motion 3D QuickTime to Keynote slides
  • NEW: Option to skip to selected events for 3D exports
  • NEW: Professional quality motion blur for 3D video exports
  • NEW: Automatically import To Do items from Things by Cultured Code
  • IMPROVED: Video export is more efficient (faster)
  • IMPROVED: Quality improved for video export presets
  • IMPROVED: When entering 3D mode, current selection is respected
  • FIXED: Removing an event in bulk edit while editing text caused freeze
  • FIXED: Undo was not working properly for deleted events in bulk edit
  • FIXED: Undo was not working properly for newly added events in bulk edit
  • FIXED: QuickTime chapters are no longer added to HD exports for compatibility with iMovie

Great Idea... needs some more work!
1)The demo version stop saving the timeline after 50 events added.

2) The photos imported are not scaled down in resolution, result a 420 Mb file after 50 pictures added then the application crashes.

3) There must be a more intelligent way to batch import photos from iphoto/aperture or a simple folder, automatically placing them on a Timeline according to the date of the photo.

4) In the painstakingly long manual process of importing photos one by one, the lack info regarding the date of the photo, in the photo sliding window, does not facilitate the process of creating events based on the date of the photo. Also there is no direct placing of the photo to the timeline as an event.

The software needs more developement and refinement before becoming user friendly and more efficent.

Just bought the 3D timeline..love it..instantly using it to plan events and share with others. Video and keynote exports are great.

One thing I have been suprised by is the size of the PDFs that are created both on export and email, it was trying to email a 135MB PDF!

What about a quality option for export?

Nick,

Thanks!

Yes, I agree that it would be great to have an option to compress the PDF on export. Thanks for the feedback.

Adam,
We just purchased the timeliner and love it. played with the trial for a while but love the features of the purchased version. Trying to create a link that can be activated while in the presentation mode? I understand that this wouldn't be possible in the 3D part, but wonder if it could be when click to 2D? During a presentation we don't just want to stay in 2D the whole time? Suggestions?

Hi Adam,

I just bought the software and it yet was very helpful.

I hat to create a CV and used Timeline for this purpose.

These are my wishes:
1. There should be a way to gather a timeline. There are times where nothing happes... nearly - and when I want to print out these I get a very long dokument with pages with nothing in it.
2. There should be a printing dialog where I can choose a timeslot, e.g. from 1975 to 1991. Of course it would be elegant to warp this too.

Kind regards from Germany and thanks for the translation. Is there a hint on your website, that it is multilingual?

Stefan

Cheers for the update and the postcard! Greetings from Liverpool.

Phenomenal update. Although the Keynote presentations resulting from a 'movie' export are quite large, the result looks amazing. Thanks so much for this!

Why can't you add vertical timeline. Also, the text on the timeline should be permitted to rotate vertically so you could add more dates.

This is a great update. Love this app! I use this software for trial presentation.

When will Bee Docs add the ability to link documents and video files while in 3D presentation mode? It would be great if Timeline had the ability to create hyperlinks to a document or video in the notes section. How great would it be to click those hyperlinks, the screen fades to Preview or QuickTime (or another application of your choosing) and then, with a hotkey, you could revert back to the 3D presentation.

This would be HUGE!

Hi Adam,

How do I create a timeline of to-do's from Things?? I currently only have the trial version of things to see how this works. Do I need the full version?

Jon

Blogger Adam BehringerApril 21, 2009 1:46 PM

Jonathan,

No you do not need a licensed version to import from Things.

If you have Things installed on your hard drive, then when you launch Bee Docs Timeline its icon will show up on the welcome screen. Click the icon and choose "Configure" to pick which information you would like to import.

Please note that only tasks that have due dates will be imported from Things. Please send us an e-mail if you need more help. Thanks!

Adam, can you truncate the timeline? Have long periods of time with no event which is making the timeline very long. Also, when exporting to pdf text is getting cut off. Tried the scale solution in the help but it did not work.

Love the app by the way.

Blogger Adam BehringerDecember 07, 2009 4:29 PM

Gretchen - We don't have a truncate feature but you may want to consider splitting your timeline into two documents.
