I think the new icon “works” in several ways (at least for me it does). First, it recalls the present icon (the timelines, the color pencil, the spiral notebook) so we will recognize the app in the new image. But second, it exhibits the “upgrade” in that the timelines are solid, not simply “sketched” and somewhat “unfinished” looking as in the present icon. Third, the pencil is now a felt-tipped pen ready to produce a more finished timeline, and the notebook is no longer a spiral bound item that we put in a pocket but looks to be leather bound, a repository for more serious, permanent work. Upgraded app, upgraded functionality,...captured in an upgraded icon.
Thanks! We were inspired by the love that so many people have for their Moleskin notebooks.
Kenichi has done many beautiful illustrations for BEEDOCS, but this one is my favorite!
Adam,
I like the icon. But I wonder if, in v3, we'll actually be able to make timelines like those depicted in the icon. Currently, in order to have multiple bands you must also have multiple rows with their tick marks and years.
Additionally, you can't currently choose the width of the event line.
Finally, this icon does do away with the arrows of the current icon, but it would be nice to add this feature so that I could add an event like 'Start of Industrial Age' and then have an arrow pointing to the right.
Relatedly, it would be nice to be able to label dates 'Circa' or 'About' to distinguish them from events on an exact date.
I love Timeline 3D, but for these reasons I find myself having to use Omnigraffle to create timelines way too often.
rcniman - In regards to your final suggestions about "Circa" dates, please see this blog post from a few days ago: http://bit.ly/eogelk
Thanks for your feedback!
Adam - probably the very last thing on your mind right now, but inquiring minds want to know... Is BeeDocs planning to jump onboard the Mac App Store bandwagon? (or are you holding out until Apple figures out how to let companies migrate existing customers, which apparently is a bit of a nightmare)
Zacaman - Our flagship timeline software Timeline 3D (v3) will be available exclusively at www.beedocs.com for the foreseeable future.
However, we are looking into the possibility of bringing other products to the Mac App Store including the possibility of a simplified timeline app. I am trying to learn from the experiences of other developers and no final decision has been made yet.
What a beautiful bold icon! Visually more striking and appealing than the old one. :D
